The biggest boxing fight of 2023 is about to go down and will also almost definitely go down in history!
The fight between Spence and Crawford is a highly anticipated one. It will be held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Both fighters are undefeated and have a lot of experience in the ring. It should be an interesting match-up to watch!
The welterweight fight between two of the best boxers of the moment, who could have chosen to avoid each other in order to keep their unbeaten records, begs for competition in a year in which the heavyweight division, which is traditionally boxings greatest source of publicity, seems to be plagued by a significant few of it's top names not seeming to be willing to put legacy above money and respect in boxing careers that will ultimately be subject to intense scrutiny when boxing history is analyzed maybe 5 to 10 years from today.
Spence vs Crawford just may end being bigger or at worst almost as big as the first fight between Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns dubbed "The Showdown," which took place on September 16, 1981. Leonard, who was coming off a long layoff, faced the undefeated Hearns in a welterweight title unification bout. It was an intense and closely contested fight, with both fighters having their moments. Leonard, known for his boxing skills and speed, was able to withstand Hearns' powerful punches and mounted a comeback in the later rounds. In the 13th round, he managed to score a TKO victory, stopping Hearns and becoming the unified welterweight champion.
Spence vs Crawford may rival or surpass it's 42 year precursor probably because this time around, we have 2 undefeated fighters who do not seem to have a glaring weakness that gives one fighter a significant advantage. Of course, one question that will be answered in this fight is how much Errol Spence Junior has recovered from that high speed accident 4 years ago!
On October 10, 2019, boxer Errol Spence Jr. was involved in a serious car accident in Dallas, Texas. The accident occurred in the early morning hours when Spence lost control of his Ferrari and crashed it at a high speed. The vehicle flipped multiple times before coming to a stop.Spence was immediately transported to the hospital and underwent surgery for facial injuries. He was initially reported to be in stable condition but required intensive care. Thankfully, he did not seem to suffer any life-threatening injuries from the accident and the fact that after a period of recovery and rehabilitation, he returned to the ring on December 5, 2020, over a year after the accident, to successfully defend his IBF and WBC welterweight titles against the highly rated Danny Garcia, to a large extent demonstrated not just his remarkable resilience and determination, but also a significant level of recovery on his part.
But today, the extent of Spence's recovery will surely be finally confirmed or not because he has never squared up against a boxer of Terence Crawford's reputation or quality. Since moving up to Welterweight, "Bud" Crawford has surpassed Spence, the more natural divisionist, in that the former has won all his fights within the distance. The most remarkable of these stoppages by Crawford was his ability to be the first and only man to stop Shawn Porter and end Porter's career. That Spence earlier dropped but was unable to stop Porter would seem to justify his being the underdog going into today's fight. Also seen to be in Crawford's favour are his very impressive ring I.Q, Stance switching, Counter punching, Power, Accuracy, Offensive Diversity, Defensive Sophistication and mental toughness.
But we MUST NOT underrate Spence tonight! He is definitely among the very best body punchers in this era of boxing and he also has a wide arsenal of premium boxing qualities that have led to his undefeated record in one of boxing's most challenging boxing divisions.
In boxing, it has been proven that the man with better skills DOES NOT ALWAYS win the fight if the lesser skilled fighter is able to maximize his advantages. Spence, being the bigger man with respected, proven skills and the more natural welterweight, MAY JUST beat Terence "Bud Crawford tonight!! That he finally took this fight when he had the option of moving up in weight should NOT BE IGNORED!!
Get your popcorn ready, folks!!
